The high lifetime prevalence of depression in multiple sclerosis makes the psychiatric complications a major component of disease management. Recent studies have better characterized this difficult component of MS, and determined risk factors for suicidal behavior. Despite concerns of beta-interferon contributing to depression, controlled studies have failed to show a significant risk in inducing depression.
